Kacey Lee Musgraves was born on August 21, 1988 in Golden, Texas. She made her stage debut when she was 8 years old and wrote her first song, "Notice Me," a year later. That's precisely what she tried to get people to do for the next several years. While growing up in east Texas, Musgraves honed her songwriting abilities and learned how to play several instruments, including the guitar, mandolin and harmonica.

She self-released three albums before appearing on the USA Network singing competition show "Nashville Star" in 2007. She placed seventh and although she didn't win, the experience convinced her to move to Nashville. The exposure she got from appearing on the show proved helpful.

Musgraves got some traction in the Nashville music scene and she soon found success as a songwriter, penning songs for major country artists like Miranda Lambert – who also got her start on "Nashville Star" –and Martina McBride. Musgraves had a fair amount of interest from labels after she scored a publishing contract, but their vision of her didn't quite fit her own so she held out.
